“It’s almost like a perpetual motion machine.”

Sailing journalist Øyvind Bordal joined Searine for a day on the water aboard the Black Pepper Code 0.1 to experience the Searine M360° in real sailing conditions.

Øyvind Bordal has spent years writing about sailing and marine technology. He has also owned an electric boat himself, giving him first-hand experience with both the opportunities and limitations of electric propulsion.

When Searine invited him aboard the lightweight carbon performance cruiser Black Pepper Code 0.1, there were a few features he was particularly interested in seeing for himself.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out on the water. I’ve had a few issues with my own boat lately, so this is actually my first proper sailing trip in a while.”

A different way to manoeuvre

Before leaving the marina, Morten demonstrated Port Mode.

As the drive rotated together with the rudder, the boat turned tightly inside the harbour.

“It almost turns on a plate,” Øyvind commented.

Having taught many sailors to handle larger yachts, he immediately related the feature to a familiar challenge.

“Harbour manoeuvres are always the biggest challenge. If you can make them easier by giving sailors more control and a tighter turning radius, that’s fantastic.”

Curious about hydrogeneration

One of the main reasons Øyvind wanted to test the system was hydrogeneration.

“That’s the feature I find most interesting. If you can make that work, you’ve almost created a perpetual motion machine.”

Once the sails were up, the system was switched into Hydrogeneration Mode. The display showed around 700 watts flowing back into the batteries while sailing.

Watching the numbers, Øyvind smiled.

“It’s like putting money in the bank.”

Data for those who enjoy the details

Another feature that caught Øyvind’s attention was the amount of live information available through the system.

The Searine M360° app displays battery status, power consumption, hydrogeneration, range and operating mode in real time.

“Some people might feel overwhelmed by all the numbers and data. But for a nerd like me, it’s fantastic.”

A system designed for sailing

After a day on the water, Øyvind’s takeaway wasn’t based on a specification sheet.

Instead, it came from seeing how the different elements worked together in practice—from the harbour manoeuvrability to hydrogeneration and the integrated control system.

For someone who has followed electric propulsion for years, it was an opportunity to experience how these technologies perform outside the exhibition hall and in real sailing conditions.
